Schools
For both elementary and high school students, the school year begins during the last week of August or beginning of September and finishes in late May.
It is generally compulsory in all provinces for children aged 6 to 15 or 16 years to attend school. Given that Canadians place so much importance on education, the government ensures that education is available to all within this age bracket through the provision of free, secular primary and secondary schools. Parents need not pay tuition at such public schools (the government pays), however, parents must be able to supply the extras, such as clothing and books.
The alternative to public schooling is sending children to a private school. Fees for these institutions vary. Few Canadian parents would seem to prefer this option at the moment. The government does, however, regularly implement quality assurance controls and reviews of all schools, regardless whether they are public or private, in order to maintain high and equitable standards for all.
